Understanding Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) and What Low Levels Mean for Your Battery

Tammy Warren • November 22, 2024

When it comes to car batteries, one important specification you may come across is Cold Cranking Amps

(CCA). This measurement indicates a battery's ability to start an engine in cold temperatures. Specifically, CCA

refers to the number of amps a battery can deliver at 0 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 seconds while maintaining a

voltage of at least 7.2 volts.

When the CCA rating is low, it can signal potential problems for your vehicle. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Starting Power in Cold Weather: A low CCA means your battery may struggle to provide the necessary

power to start your engine in colder temperatures. This is particularly important in regions that experience

harsh winters. If your battery isn’t able to deliver enough amps, you might find yourself facing frustrating

mornings when your car won’t start.

2. Engine Performance: Even if the weather is mild, a battery with low CCA may not perform optimally. It can

lead to slow engine cranking, which puts additional strain on the starter motor and can lead to premature

wear or failure.

3. Battery Health: Low CCA ratings can indicate that your battery is aging or deteriorating. As batteries age,

their capacity to hold a charge diminishes, and they may not perform as well under load. Regularly testing

your battery’s CCA can help you gauge its health and determine when it’s time for a replacement.

4. Preventive Measures: If you notice that your battery’s CCA is low, it’s wise to take action. Consider having

your battery tested at a repair shop. If it’s nearing the end of its lifespan, replacing it before winter can save

you from the hassle of breakdowns.
