Winter Tips and Maintenance for Your Automobile

Tammy Warren • January 10, 2025

During winter, it's important to perform a thorough check-up and maintenance on your automobile to ensure it's safe and reliable in cold weather conditions. Here’s a checklist of key areas to focus on:

1. Battery: Cold weather can reduce battery efficiency, so check the battery charge and terminals for corrosion. Consider

replacing an old battery.

2. Antifreeze/Coolant: Ensure your coolant is at the right level and is the appropriate mix to prevent freezing. Check for

leaks.

3. Tires: Inspect tire tread depth and pressure. Consider switching to winter tires for better traction in snow and ice.

4. Wipers and Washer Fluid: Replace worn wiper blades and ensure the washer fluid is rated for cold temperatures.

5. Brakes: Check brake pads, rotors, and fluid to ensure safe stopping power.

6. Lights: Inspect all lights, including headlights, brake lights, and turn signals, to ensure visibility.

7. Oil Change: Consider switching to winter-grade oil if you haven't already. Ensure your oil is clean and at the right level.

8. Heater and Defroster: Test your heating and defrosting systems to ensure they are working properly.

9. Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency kit with items like blankets, food, water, flashlight, and a first-aid kit.

10. Fuel: Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent fuel line freeze-up and to ensure you have enough fuel in case of emergencies.

Regularly checking and maintaining these components will help ensure your vehicle operates safely and efficiently throughout the winter months.
